An iPhone app designed to verify Pennsylvania mail-in ballots gets rejected by Apple

Pennsylvania is a swing state in this year’s complicated election, and with the world currently experiencing a global pandemic, more people are mailing in their ballots than ever. Due to this, a common worry that people are experiencing is if their ballot will arrive and be counted in time for the election results. That’s precisely the reason why one developer created an app called Drive Turnout.

Drive Turnout is an app designed to assist users in validating that their own or their loved one’s ballots have been successfully counted. All that a user would need is the particular voter’s name, date of birth, and county for the app to verify if that person’s ballot had yet been counted. The app would do this by utilizing publicly available information via a Pennsylvania state website.

Despite this app seeming to be relatively simple and not out of the ordinary, the developer Ari Steinberg has come forward today saying that Apple rejected the app from entering the App Store. He was taken back by what he thought was a rather odd rejection. He also expressed some frustration due to the length of time it took the app to get rejected, something he said took two weeks.

According to Steinberg, Apple referenced one of its guidelines as the reason for rejecting Drive Turnout. The guideline reads as follows, “Apps that compile personal information from any source that is not directly from the user or without the user’s explicit consent, even public databases, are not permitted on the App Store.”

Steinberg has said that his goal with the app was to make already publicly available information more easily accessible to people. He also stated that he would rather Apple have an open conversation about making such important information available within apps as opposed to merely rejecting it.

A point that Steinberg made was that Apple’s own address book clearly allows users to import contact information for their friends without their consent. This would seem to violate Apple’s own guidelines to some degree.

This all leads back to a common complaint of Apple’s App Store approval process that has come into public view this year. Apple has been arguably inconsistent when enforcing its guidelines for approving apps, causing many developers to become publicly upset and voice their opinions on the matter. Steinberg’s case makes it even more apparent that Apple needs to become more consistent in enforcing its guidelines and working with developers before rejections.

ATSC 3.0 reaches the smartphone – Light Reading

ATSC 3.0, a new broadcast signaling standard branded as “NextGenTV,” is starting to break away from the TV screen and gain its first foothold on the smartphone.

One Media 3.0, a subsidiary of Sinclair Broadcasting, said it has taken possession of its first handful of Android smartphones with embedded ATSC 3.0 antennas. This initial batch of devices – branded as the Mark One, and unlocked to run on the T-Mobile and AT&T mobile networks – are not production-grade products but are instead considered evaluation units tagged for trials and tests.

Delivery of these first phones was delayed due to supply chain issues wrought by the pandemic. One Media’s first run of ATSC 3.0-capable smartphones were made by Borqs, an original equipment manufacturer based in India. The Mark One is powered in part by a new SDR (software-defined radio) chipset from Saankhya Labs, another India-based company whose chip operation in Bangalore just happens to be right near Borqs.

One Media expects to receive “several hundred units” for a broader set of tests this November or December, according to Mark Aitken, president of One Media 3.0 and SVP of advanced technology for Sinclair.

The new phones, effectively reference designs, are surfacing as US broadcasters push ahead with deployments of ATSC 3.0, a new, IP-based broadcast signaling standard that enables advancements such as 4K and High Dynamic Range (HDR) video, live TV and video-on-demand, new forms of OTT-delivered streaming services from broadcasters, targeted and interactive advertising and new emergency alerting capabilities. Meanwhile, Evoca, a video startup, is using a mix of ATSC 1.0 and 3.0 technologies to power a new multichannel pay-TV service that recently debuted in Boise, Idaho.

While ATSC 3.0 will target TVs, One Media’s work in the smartphone area speaks to the mobile use-cases of the new standard. Some of the initial work with the Mark One will focus on new emergency alerting capabilities.

“We see that as a good political lever, if you will, to getting acceptance of chips in phones,” Aitken said. “But we tackled [the smartphone] because we really see it as a kind of device that provides support for multiple use cases. A phone, as fairly difficult as it was, satisfied the largest set of possibilities to demonstrate business models.”

Delivering broadcast TV in an IP format to the phone is among the potential use cases. “The Internet has never had a broadcast mode,” Aitken said. “This standard can play a significant role as a broadcast standard, fully integrated into a hybrid Internet model.”

One Media ran point on the development of the first ATSC 3.0-capable smartphones. Although it doesn’t expect to go into the phone business it does expect to form additional relationships with OEMs to make the phones now that there’s a reference design.

MVNO talks

Aitken said One Media is in “steady discussions” with two yet unnamed US MVNOs about the distribution of ATSC 3.0-capable “broadcast feature phones” that could help them retain customers while also offering something new in the market.

“One of the opportunities with an MVNO is that you don’t need a national platform for them to sell a feature,” he said. “For them, the idea of having the availability of live streaming services becomes a feature … that your big players don’t necessarily offer.”

A recent example is T-Mobile’s new TVision streaming service, with an initial focus on its postpaid mobile subscriber base. However, T-Mobile’s new offering is a subscription service, not one focused on the delivery of technically free local broadcast channels.

Aitken said One Media is also talking with two “very large volume Internet presences” to distribute phones through them, but likewise isn’t at liberty to name them. “We could be a huge part of the marketing side of phones associated with services,” he added.

Desire to ride the 5G wave

One Media’s initial phones took on the difficult technical task of embedding an ATSC 3.0 antenna. But the initial design could pave the way for products that could be mass-produced and possibly get unit costs in the neighborhood of $150 for mid-level smartphones equipped with ATSC 3.0 componentry.

Tied in, One Media and US broadcasters are also working on ways to alter the topology of the broadcast network to ensure uniformity in coverage that big towers might not provide in all instances and in all venues. Aitken believes that there could be opportunities for small ATSC 3.0-based transmitters to be deployed alongside 5G network buildouts and help to flesh out the reach of a new IP-based distribution network.

“If you want to serve all of the way out to the edge of the contour you’ve been given for service by the FCC, you’ve got to fill it in,” Aitken said.

Hands-on: Amazon Fresh grocery stores tease brick-and-mortar retail’s future

There were no lines outside Irvine, California’s new Amazon Fresh grocery store on its opening day last week, despite the fact that it was only the second such location in the world — and the first to be open to the public on day one. But after early visitors discovered the store’s high-tech shopping carts, two lines formed over the weekend, stretching past Amazon’s front doors to adjacent retailers in the suburban plaza. One line was longer and moving slower than the other.

“Do you want to try the Dash Cart?” an employee asked people near the end of the queue. “If not, you can move into the shorter line, and you’ll get in faster.”

We were there specifically for the Dash Cart: Friends told us that it was worth the 10- to 20-minute wait to go hands-on with one of the 25 magical shopping carts, since their integrated touchscreens and cameras were the key to Amazon’s next-generation shopping experience. The Dash Cart felt like the future of brick-and-mortar retail, they said, even though the rest of the store wasn’t that amazing.

Our friends were correct, but there’s more to the Amazon Fresh story than just Dash Carts. Here’s what it’s like to visit the supermarket of the future, today, as it’s been dreamed up and implemented by Amazon.

A boxy, spartan layout, seemingly by design

Unlike Whole Foods, the high-end supermarket chain Amazon acquired in 2017, Amazon Fresh stores look like small warehouses, and have all the charm of Walmart’s grocery sections, minus two-thirds the people and half the choices. From the signage to the aisles and specialty counters, Amazon’s latest store feels as if it was designed largely by engineers, and conceived to be as easy as possible to retrofit inside another retailer’s abandoned space — in this case, the 40,000 feet formerly occupied by a Babies R Us store.

Apart from the produce, nothing about the environment feels organic: Floors are spartan, displays are boxy, and everything looks to have been optimized for customers by computers, rather than humans. There are places to purchase whole cooked chickens for $4.97 and pizzas for $8.99, but nowhere to sit and eat them. A staffed customer service area is in the back, not the front, which instead allocates a lot of interior space to managing shopping carts.

Even the baked goods, which in other stores flow attractively off the edges of store shelves, seem to have been assigned to a specific corner of Amazon Fresh and told to stay firmly within the lines. If it wasn’t for a cadre of friendly greeters, walking through Amazon Fresh would feel more like visiting a warehouse or Costco than shopping in a typical supermarket of its size.

That feeling extends to how Amazon Fresh uses — and doesn’t use — people in its operations. Instead of having employees answer inventory-related questions, Amazon scatters Alexa terminals throughout the store, offering AI guidance on item locations, wine pairings, and measurement unit conversions. On our first visit, the Alexa terminals were both working and helpful, accurately pointing us towards items we wanted to locate. But on our second visit, all of the terminals were experiencing “connectivity issues,” perhaps the closest Amazon Fresh stores will get to a business-disrupting employee strike.

The Alexa terminals suggest that Amazon wants to staff Fresh stores as leanly as possible, even if it’s liberally using employees during the launch phase to address potential customer pain points. There were lots of Fresh staffers — too many, really — constantly restocking shelves while otherwise keeping to themselves, plus the aforementioned greeters at the front doors to help get people in and out of the store. In traditional supermarkets, all of these employees might be floaters who move from place to place as needed, alternating between helping customers and restocking shelves. But at Amazon Fresh, Alexa could help reduce the need for greeters as customers become familiar with the technology, and shelving recalibrations could reduce the need for such frequent stock replenishment.

Lower labor costs could translate directly into lower prices. And half of the new store’s appeal is reasonable pricing — that’s the single biggest problem with Whole Foods, which offers well-heeled customers an impressive selection of high-end foods and beverages that just aren’t affordable to the masses. By contrast, Amazon Fresh is clearly aimed at middle-income shoppers who still want to do some of their purchasing and browsing in person instead of on a computer screen. There are a handful of fancy items on the shelves, such as $10 pints of McConnell’s ice cream, but most of the signage is directed towards selling 15-cent bananas and 89-cent loaves of bread, rather than champagne and caviar.

Dash Cart as a solution and a problem

The more exciting part of Amazon Fresh is the Dash Cart, a shopping cart that uses sensors and smartphone technology to replace checkout lanes and standalone produce scales. As mentioned above, you don’t have to use a Dash Cart to shop at Amazon Fresh, and despite its speedy name, you’ll likely get in and out of the store faster without waiting for one. But without a Dash Cart, the shopping experience isn’t hugely different from any old small suburban supermarket you’ve previously visited.

Once you make it through the Dash Cart waiting line, you’ll get a three-minute human tutorial that explains how to link your cart to your Amazon app with a QR code, scan packaged items by dropping them into one of two included paper bags, and add produce items by inputting four-digit PLU codes into the cart’s tablet screen. These steps are supposed to eliminate the need for employees to check you out and bag your purchases; instead, the cart’s cameras and scale track everything you place in the bags, so when you leave the store, your Amazon account is automatically charged for whatever you bagged yourself. It’s an evolution of what Amazon pioneered with much smaller Amazon Go stores years ago.

Dash Carts are cool in concept, but their execution leaves a lot to be desired. On a positive note, their cameras and software did a good job with accurately scanning items we placed in the bags, and automatically removing items if we pulled them from the cart. The tablet-like touchscreen worked as expected, and though the scale inside the cart wasn’t fast, it could — with practice — be faster than walking over to a standalone produce scale and printing out a label for each item.

On the other hand, the Dash Carts had limitations that beg to be resolved in future iterations. Each cart is limited to two bags, which restricts your ability to complete a full shopping trip, and limits Amazon’s maximum take per shopper. You can’t overfill the bags, lest the cart’s cameras become incapable of seeing what’s inside. Additionally, Amazon is so concerned about theft or damage that it swaps each Dash Cart for a regular one before customers leave for the parking lot, or hands you the bags to carry to whatever distant parking space you selected. These are the sorts of practical inconveniences that could kill Dash Cart’s utility for some people.

Real-world glitches also undermined our Dash Cart experience. One of our bags ripped and needed to be replaced during the cart-to-cart transfer. We also had to go through a manual checkout line — including rescanning and rebagging every item — because our cart’s integrated code scanner couldn’t recognize an Amazon coupon. Staff said that the carts were somewhat finicky and had been experiencing hiccups like this.

Whenever one of these issues with the Dash Cart popped up, we felt as if we were holding up people who were waiting behind us, even though the issues weren’t really our fault. Other delays, such as learning how to enter PLU codes and weigh produce, caused Dash Cart users to abruptly stop mid-aisle and fidget with the tablet’s screen. We noticed some customers without the high-tech carts becoming visibly frustrated with other customers’ Dash-inspired touch interactions, but cart users seemed to be too focused on their screens to notice.

Could data make all the difference for future retailers?

It’s easy to overlook a key element of this retail experience — the intersection between Amazon.com and Amazon Fresh — because it’s so muddled at the moment. But it could wind up being a critical differentiator for Amazon’s brick-and-mortar ventures going forward.

As part of the initial onboarding experience, Amazon openly encourages Dash Cart users to digitally manage their shopping lists with the cart and browse current in-store specials using their phones. This is a mess for two reasons: The cart’s integrated shopping list management software is extremely limited, and the idea of asking users to check not just one but two touchscreens while they’re shopping is just straight-out crazy. No one wants to be stuck behind that guy who’s blocking shelves or freezers while browsing through lists and brochures. If Larry David ever visits Amazon Fresh, there’s enough material here for an entire Curb Your Enthusiasm sub-plot.

Yet there’s obvious value in tying the internet directly — and more thoughtfully — to a customer’s shopping cart. Your first visit to an Amazon Fresh store could conceivably be your last trip through its aisles: Amazon could just present you with a list of the items you purchased, offer to reorder them, and make them instantly available for either pickup or delivery. That could eliminate the need (and the premium people currently pay) for Instacart. It also could reduce the footprints of future Amazon Fresh stores by lowering the number of people who simultaneously walk through them, enabling many customers to complete transactions using the equivalent of drive-through windows.

Amazon is technically doing some if not most of these things already, but it needs to refine its smartphone and cart software to make the end-to-end experience intuitive and frictionless for customers. Somewhat ironically, the sign that it has succeeded will be if its Fresh grocery stores aren’t packed with people but are still hugely profitable, which is to say that they’ll be moving tons of products without the packed aisles and long lines normally associated with successful supermarkets.

The best of the rest of Amazon, plus coupons

One thing we loved at Amazon Fresh was an area labeled “Customer Service, Returns & Pick Up.” Normally, these things are found very close to the entrance of a supermarket, but at Amazon Fresh, they’re in the back, a decision that was likely made to get returns and pick-ups closer to the store’s storage areas and loading docks. Customers can pick up items from Amazon lockers and drop off Amazon returns — conveniences that simultaneously provide an incentive to do grocery shopping while eliminating the need to visit standalone Amazon shipping and return locations, something we can see ourselves using at least occasionally.

Amazon Fresh also includes a limited selection of the online retailer’s popular gadgets and books. We spotted the José Andrés cookbook Vegetables Unleashed and the Death & Co. cocktail guide on shelves only a short distance away from Fire tablets and Echo speakers, none of which we were looking to purchase at a supermarket — but then, we had already bought some of them online in the past. Over time, new items will replace them, and we might have reason to consider buying non-grocery goods at Amazon Fresh, as well.

At this stage, it would be hard to describe Amazon Fresh as the guaranteed future of brick-and-mortar retailing; the experience currently feels closer to a public beta test than a fully formed and polished business. Visitors can certainly have a normal or even a unique experience in the store, but they’re actually guinea pigs in a grand experiment that runs smoothly — until it doesn’t.

To Amazon’s credit, the speed bumps aren’t too daunting. Moreover, the company is actively addressing problems by handing out coupons to apologize for technical issues, and on one of our two visits, was giving away free cans of sparkling water and refrigerator magnets to everyone exiting the store. Despite the glitches, we didn’t see anyone leaving the store angry, and between the coupons and the small number of bags we left with, we were already planning our next trip to the store as we walked out to our car.

Only Amazon knows whether such a mixed but positive impression counts as “mission accomplished” or whether its early Amazon Fresh grocery customers are just helping it refine a larger campaign to completely dominate the retail world. Thanks to Amazon’s growing scale and unquestionable ambition, the Fresh grocery stores could either become very real challengers to traditional supermarkets — or fizzle out as experiments that made little difference to the company’s bottom line.

Our review of the iPhone 12 is already up, but we’ve also been spending some quality time with the more premium iPhone 12 Pro. But while the review team is still doing its thing here go a few early thoughts.

The iPhone 12 Pro certainly makes a better first impression than the iPhone 12. For starters the frame isn’t aluminum but stainless steel. It feels better too and it’s shinier.

The rear glass is nicer to touch too, thanks to its matte finish (the regular 12 gets a shiny one). Finally the iPhone 12 Pro gains 25 grams on the regular 12, making it feel denser and more solid.

Otherwise Apple made the iPhone 12 Pro and 12 the same exact dimensions so any case that would fit one, would also work on the other.

The next big difference between the 12 Pro and regular iPhone 12 is the 12MP 52mm f/2.0 2x telephoto camera on the iPhone 12 Pro. We’re fans of telephoto cameras, but would have to say that having the same old 2x camera from the 11 Pro isn’t nearly enough to justify the $200/€243/£200 premium on the Pro.

Moving to the screens and we have a minute difference. The iPhone 12 and 12 Pro both feature 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED panels with HDR10 support and 1170x2532px resolution, but the iPhone 12 tops at 600 nits, while the iPhone 12 Pro brings it a bit further to 800 nits. We can’t say it’s a noticeable difference when the two are side by side, though. Both also have the same peak brightness of 1200 nits for HDR content though.

Finally there are storage options and RAM. The iPhone 12 Pro has a base storage of 128GB with the upgrade tiers of 256GB and 512GB, while the iPhone 12 starts at 64GB and brings it all the way up to 256GB. The iPhone 12 gets 4GB of RAM, while the Pro has 6GB – something that might seem like a decent upgrade, but doesn’t seem to make a huge difference at least in these early days.

So overall, the iPhone 12 Pro has a few things to justify its price premium over the iPhone 12. Which is much smaller if you need to equalize storage. Overall we’d say paying more for the Pro is worth it if you enjoy the perspective of the telephoto camera or plan on carrying it without a case and enjoy the nicer build quality. But we’re also here to tell you that the iPhone 12 feels just as fast than the Pro, is a bit lighter thanks to its aluminum frame, and comes in nicer colors. This year the line between Apple’s regular and Pro lines is very much blurred.

A quick word for iPhone 11 Pro users looking to get an iPhone 12 Pro. The 12 Pro looks bigger but doesn’t feel like that, mainly due to its virtually unchanged weight. The flat edges make the iPhone 12 Pro a different-feeling phone in the hand and we welcome the change. Apple was able to make a phone like no other in the market – one with flat sides and a fully-flat display and it almost feels revolutionary after so many years of lightly to outrageously curved devices.

Yet upgrading from the iPhone 11 Pro to the 12 Pro is hard to justify. Yes, the new phone is faster and yes, it has a bigger screen, but neither is a big difference. As we see it the only reasonable upgrade path for 11 Pro owners is the 12 Pro Max if you can live with the much larger phone.

You can now get the new Apple One services bundle

Back in June, we received rumors suggesting that Apple was working on bundling several of its services into one package that would also help its users save some bucks. This new service was later announced during Apple’s September event, which also introduced the new iPad Air and the Apple Watch Series 6, but it took some time before it became available. Now, Apple One is finally available and up for grabs.

Apple One is a new alternative from Apple that lets you bundle several of its services, allowing you to pay a single fixed rate instead of separate monthly payments that would also add up to more money at the end of each month. The bundles include a subscription to multiple Apple services, which include Apple Music, Apple TV+, Apple Arcade, and more.

To sign up for Apple One, you must first go to the Settings App, then tap on Your Name at the top, then Subscriptions, and finally tap on Apple One. However, it may not appear on your device at first, so keep checking, and it will eventually appear.

  • Now, there are three basic tiers to choose from:
    The Individual package includes Apple Music, Apple TV+, Apple Arcade, and 50GB of iCloud for $14.95 a month.
  • The Family package includes Apple Music, Apple TV+, Apple Arcade, and 200GB of iCloud storage for $19.95 a month, which can be shared with up to six family members.
  • Finally, the Premier package includes Apple Music, Apple TV+, Apple Arcade, Apple News+, Apple Fitness+, and 2TB of iCloud storage for $29.95 per month, and yes, you can also share this one with up to six family members.

Apple One bundles are now available in the United States and in more than 100 countries around the world. However, the Premier package is currently limited to the United States, Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom since these are the only countries where the Apple New+ service is available. And don’t forget that Apple Fitness+ is still not available, as it’s expected to launch until later this year. The best part is that Apple One includes a 30-day free trial of any Apple service customers don’t already have, and they can also pay for this service bundle with the Apple Card to receive 3 percent Daily Cash per month.

Apple will replace faulty AirPods Pro for free

Apparently there was something to all those complaints about active noise cancellation in AirPods Pro. Apple just launched a program to replace defective AirPods Pro earbuds that have audio problems, including sucky ANC.

In a document titled “AirPods Pro Service Program for Sound Issues,” the company acknowledged that “a small percentage of AirPods Pro may experience sound issues.”

The bum earbuds, manufactured prior to October 2020, “may exhibit one or more of the following behaviors,” Apple said in its support bulletin:

Crackling or static sounds that increase in loud environments, with exercise or while talking on the phone
Active Noise Cancellation not working as expected, such as a loss of bass sound, or an increase in background sounds, such as street or airplane noise

The high-end wireless earbuds, which retail for $249, deliver active noise cancellation in a small package. Their upgraded design streamlines the look of the original AirPods, thanks to shortened stems and a slight curve. The pro buds (like the second-gen “amateur” AirPods) also pack Apple’s latest H1 wireless chip, which speeds Bluetooth connection.

Like the original AirPods, the pro model became a hit after its launch in October 2019. However, some users complained about that an early firmware update ruined the AirPods Pro’s noise cancellation feature. In May, Apple issued another firmware update that supposedly fixed crackly audio. Apparently that didn’t end all AirPods Pro audio problems, though.

How to get faulty AirPods Pro replaced

If your AirPods Pro don’t work properly, relief is finally here. Just make an appointment to take them to an Apple store or find an Apple Authorized Service Provider. If one or both earbuds is defective, you’ll get a free replacement.

Apple says this worldwide replacement program does not extend the AirPods Pro warranty. However, it does cover AirPods Pro for up to two years after their retail sale date.
