Lenovo ThinkPad T14s Review: Business laptop is better with AMD

Lenovo’s ThinkPad T14s now comes with AMD and Intel processors, so it is very interesting to compare the devices. The case and the (very good) input devices are identical on both machines, just like the good LowPower 1080p screen. However, we once again have to mention that Lenovo uses four different suppliers for the display and you do not know which one you will get. The 4K screen on the other hand is limited for Intel models.

There are also differences in terms of ports, because the AMD SKU lacks Thunderbolt 3. However, this should only be important if you want to use an external graphics card. The AMD model has some advantages in terms of features like HDMI 2.0, Bluetooth 5.1, and faster RAM.

The biggest difference is the performance. Business laptops are still using Intel’s Comet-Lake-U chips due to the support for vPro, so neither the CPU, nor the integrated GPUs stand a chance against AMDs new mobile CPUs. You get almost twice the CPU performance and even some gaming is possible on the ThinkPad.

Much more performance and less expensive: The ThinkPad T14s with the AMD processor leaves a better overall impression. The education model in particular is extremely well equipped and offers a great price-performance ratio.

There are two more drawbacks compared to the Intel mode: The fan is slightly louder under load, and the idle consumption is also a bit higher. Maybe the AMD T14s still needs some optimization, which could be achieved by upcoming BIOS updates. Still, the battery runtime is not bad by any means. Then there is the price, and this is where AMD definitely has the edge. The least expensive topseller units have a price difference of 150 Euros, and the gap gets bigger when you want to get a Core i7 SKU. The education model we reviewed with the Ryzen 7 Pro, 32 GB RAM, and a 1 TB PCIe-SSD, offers an excellent price-performance ratio for 1399 Euros.

If you do not need Thunderbolt 3 and you can live with a battery runtime of 10 hours, you are better off with the AMD based ThinkPad T14s. Thanks to the slightly better keyboard and the much higher performance, we also prefer the T14s AMD over the current generation ThinkPad X1 Carbon.
