This mobile charger quickly juices up MacBook and iPhone simultaneously [Review]

The Aukey Omnia Mix3 90W 3-Port PD Charger can juice up your MacBook Pro at nearly full speed. Or it can power your iPad, iPhone and Apple Watch all at the same time.

Since Apple stopped bundling chargers with its iPhones, but they do come with a Lightning to USB-C cable, now is a good time to consider a multi-port USB-C solution like this one.

I put the Aukey wall charger to the test powering up my devices. Read on to see how well it did.

Aukey Omnia Mix3 90W 3-Port PD Charger review

Apple’s 87W and 96W chargers are all well and good, but they’re quite bulky considering they offer only a single USB-C port. In contrast, the Aukey Omnia Mix3 Charger is about 20% smaller and offers a pair of USB-C ports and a USB-A one.

Aukey used gallium nitride semiconductors in place of silicon because GaN is much more efficient. That helps make the power adapter small.

Hardware and design

The Aukey Omnia Mix3 Charger measures 2.5 inches by 2.4 inches by 1.3 inches, and weighs 6.7 ounces. It’s portable without being pocketable. The accessory comes in white plastic, so it fits well with Apple cables.

On the front are an LED status light, the USB-A port and the two USB-C ports. There’s a pair of electrical plugs on the back suitable for use in North America. They fold down for increased portability.

Performance

This charger can output a maximum of 90W total. When just one of the USB-C ports is in use, it can provide the full 90W. If both the USB-C ports are used, one puts out 60W and the other 30W. When all three are in use, one of the USB-C ports puts out 60W while the other two ports provide 12W each.

I did my first real-world tests of Aukey’s wall charger with a 12.9-inch iPad Pro from 2020. I used an Aukey USB-C cable for the test. Starting with a dead battery, the Omnia Mix3 Charger was able to bring the battery level to 33% in half an hour. A whole hour of charging brought the battery up to 64%.

Next, I tested the power adapter with an iPhone 12. The handset was at 53% after 30 minutes, and 76% after a full hour. The recharge went so quickly because Aukey built USB Power Delivery (USB-PD) into its accessory. I used an Aukey USB-C to Lightning cable for this test.

Even with PD charging, the accessory took about another hour to fully replenish the iPhone because Apple devices’ charge rate slows as the battery level nears 100%.

Aukey Omnia Mix3 90W 3-Port PD Charger final thoughts

Macs, iPhones and iPads are amazing, but the accessories Apple bundles with them are often marginal. You can do better, and the Aukey Omnia Mix3 Charger is a good example. It packs 90W of power into a relatively svelte design, and can take on three devices at once.

Pricing and comparisons

The list price for the Omnia Mix3 Charger is $59.99, but it’s currently on sale for $49.99 on the Aukey website. It’s also available on Amazon for that some price.

As a cost comparison, consider that the Apple 96W USB-C Power Adapter offers slightly more wattage, but only a single port. Plus, it’s bulkier and costs $79.

The Minix Neo P1 is even smaller than Aukey’s wall charger, and still makes room for dual USB-C ports and a USB-A one. But it can only put out 66W. It costs $34.90.
