What is Sky Broadband Ultrafast? The lowdown on Sky’s premium package

Sky launched its Broadband Ultrafast package at the tail end of 2020, promising download speeds up to 12 times faster than the company’s standard broadband offering.

But whether you’re able to tap into Sky Broadband Ultrafast very much depends on the infrastructure of where you live. At the time of writing, Sky says its Broadband Ultrafast made been made available to 18.5% of UK homes.

There’s a simple checker on Sky’s site, where you can pop in your postcode and find out whether your area supports Sky Broadband Ultrafast. If it does, then you’ll be able to sign up for an average download speed of 145Mbps, and an average upload speed of 27Mbps.

Last year, Sky talked about two tiers of Broadband Ultrafast, with a second package (Broadband Ultrafast 2) promising average speeds of 285Mbps. Since then, there has been no public mention of Broadband Ultrafast 2, nor when it can be expected to roll out. At least for the time being, the 145Mbps package is the only one available.

In terms of price, Sky Broadband Ultrafast will set you back £35 per month on an 18-month contract, with an extra £19.95 needed for the set-up charge. Be warned that the monthly price will rise after 18 months to £44.

To put this into perspective, Sky’s basic Essential package initially costs £25 a month, with £19.95 set up costs, for 18 months. This package promises average download speeds as 11Mbits/sec. Sky’s Superfast offering is initially £27 a month, for the same period and with the same set-up costs, with an average of 59Mbits/sec.

By comparison, BT’s Fibre 100 offering promises average speeds of 145Mbps and costs £39.99 per month. The cheaper BT Superfast Fibre 2 (67Mbps) costs £31.99, whereas the top end Fibre 900 (900Mbps) costs a whopping £59.99 per month. Again, these packages are only available in locations with fibre infrastructure. 

Sky Broadband Ultrafast also comes with a ‘speed guarantee’. To quote from Sky’s smallprint:

“If after the first 14 days after activation, your broadband throughput line speed drops below the guaranteed minimum download speed (100Mbs for Sky Broadband Ultrafast), for 3 consecutive days or more, you can claim money back. You must be within your minimum term and can claim twice within it. Money back will be one month’s Sky Broadband and Talk product subscription (excluding Sky Broadband Boost), or, if within the first 30 days of activation, set-up costs too.”
