Apple has been working on a virtual reality (VR) headset for some time now. Rumours are rife about the device as the insiders have been trying to find out any leads on what consumers can expect. Now, the latest report from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo offers new insights on the VR headset.
Apple is reportedly planning to adopt a hybrid Fresnel lens design for its mixed reality headset to improve optical performance in addition to delivering a broad field of view and to keep the weight of the headset under 150 grams.
Most virtual reality headsets use Fresnel lenses, first invented some 200 years ago to focus lighthouse beams, to enable ultra-short focal lengths, but that these headsets typically weigh 300-400 grams or more with bulky form factors, reports MacRumors.
The headset, codenamed “N301,” may also have 8K displays, eye-tracking technology, and more than a dozen cameras to both track your hand movements and capture footage that can be displayed inside the headset, according to The Information. And in his new research note, Kuo reported that the device will have plastic lenses, an ultra-short focal length, and Micro-OLED displays.
The headset this time will be made of plastic instead of glass to reduce the weight of glass and in negative the thing that arises is the durability but the thing is still unknown of what material that plastic would be made. As we all know that the AR devices don’t provide that form of experience that VR devices provide and VR devices have a more compact form factor than AR devices. And this time Apple is challenged to launch the VR device which is lightweight and less clunky.
Apple recently moved Dan Riccio, its former hardware chief, into a role reportedly overseeing Apple’s AR and VR devices, which could signal the company’s commitment to launching a device sooner rather than later. However, the mixed reality headset may not be cheap: Apple has apparently discussed pricing the headset at around $3,000 (INR 2,20,000).
