Core ML will now let devs update their AI models between app updates

Apple has upgraded its Core ML machine learning framework, adding the ability for developers to update their machine learning models on the fly, Apple revealed Wednesday.

The ability to update artificial intelligence models outside of the usual app update cycle means that devs can quickly improve the machine learning smarts of particular apps without having to push out an update. That’s huge news for any app developers who feature AI components within their apps.

“In the past, you would have to push more app updates just to get the newer models in your user’s hands,” Apple engineer Anil Katti said during a dedicated WWDC session. “Now with model deployment, you can quickly and easily update your models without updating the app itself.”

Other updates for the Core ML Mac app are training AI templates that can be used for action classification in images and video. This uses poses estimation for classifying particular actions, such as exercises and dance moves.

Core ML is part of Apple’s attempts to catch up on AI

Apple introduced its Core ML software framework with iOS 11. Core ML helps to speed up app tasks involving artificial intelligence. Previously, machine learning applications had to choose between using cloud services or running incredibly slowly on mobile devices. Core ML helped to optimize these models.

It’s part of Apple’s attempts to catch up with the likes of Google on artificial intelligence. The same year that Apple introduced Core ML it also launched its own semi-academic blog, the Apple Machine Learning Journal. This lets it talk about how it uses machine learning to, “help build innovative products for millions of people around the world.”
