Alongside new Fire TV and Echo speakers, Amazon also used its autumn hardware launch event to take the wraps off a pair of new Blink security cameras: the Blink Outdoor and Blink Indoor.
The two new cameras, which will be available for pre-order from 24th September, have a square design similar to the Blink XT and XT2 cameras, capture 1080p video, have night vision capabilities and are battery powered so you can position them wherever you like without having to run cables.
With a massive claimed battery life of up to two years from a pair of AA lithium batteries, you won’t have to swap the batteries out very often, either.
The Blink Outdoor and Indoor cameras don’t come with free cloud storage for motion-triggered video clips, although there is a free trial thrown in until 31st March 2021. Subscriptions cost from £2.50 per camera per month thereafter or £8 per month for unlimited cameras.
If that sounds expensive, however, the cameras will also come bundled with the Blink Sync Module 2, which allows users to store clips instead on a network-connected USB flash drive. The Sync Module 2 supports up to ten different cameras so users will be able to connect and store footage from older existing cameras as well.
Other new features include the ability to set “activity” and “privacy” zones so users can keep motion-triggered alerts to a minimum and block out areas of the cameras field of view that they do not want to record.
Amazon is also launching a new battery pack add-on that will double the existing two-year battery life to an incredible four years in total. This will cost an additional £30. Finally, the cameras are also Alexa compatible, allowing Echo-owners to launch recorded clips or view the camera livestream with a voice command.
