Amazon’s autumn hardware event kicked off in 2020 with the unveiling of four new Echo smart speakers, all sharing the same dramatic new redesign.
Moving away from the tin of beans shape that has dominated the range since day one, the new Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Dot with Clock and a new Echo Dot Kids Edition will adopt a spherical shape, wrapped in recycled fabric with the LED ring around the base of the sphere.
The main Echo will feature automatic room EQ adjustment, Amazon’s new AZ1 neural processor inside – which the company claims will speed up Alexa responses – and it also has a touch-sensitive zone on top that allows you to snooze an alarm with a tap of your finger.
Like last year’s Echo Plus, the new Echo will also have Zigbee wireless built in to make smart home connectivity easier – although the Echo Dot will not. Inside, dual front-firing tweeters and a 3in woofer ought to improve audio quality.
The new Echo Dot and Echo Dot with Clock don’t have the smart hub of the Echo built in, and their speaker drivers are smaller at 1.6in, but they do have the same touch-to-snooze feature as the regular Echo.
The Echo Dot Kids Edition speakers look to be the most fun of the new speakers. There are two designs, with a choice of two cute patterns on the outside: one with a cartoon tiger, the other adorned with a stylised panda face. Alas, the Kids edition speakers won’t be available in the UK (at least not initially).
The new Echo range will be available to preorder from 24 September. The regular Echo will cost £90, the Echo Dot is £50 and the Echo Dot with Clock will set you back £60.

Echo Show 10
Not content with those four new Echo speakers, however, Amazon also announced a new Echo Show 10. And in another departure from the previous design, the Echo Show 10 has a barrel-shaped speaker with a 10in touchscreen display plonked on top.
The Echo Show 10 has a new 13-megapixel wide-angle camera, which can pan and zoom to keep you in frame and an upgraded speaker system with dual front-firing tweeters and a “powerful woofer”.
In slightly unnerving news, however, the speaker has a motorised base so it can silently follow you as you move around the room. That’s not all, however. With the Echo Show 10, Amazon is also introducing Netflix support.
The new Echo Show 10 will set you back £240 but, unlike the new Echo and Echo Dot speakers, won’t be available straight away. You can preorder it now, however.
