Apple TV+ added to its comedy roster Tuesday by making a series order for Acapulco, a Spanish- and English-language show. It’s inspired by the box office hit film How to Be a Latin Lover.
Eugenio Derbez starred in the movie, and he’ll star in the Apple TV+ half-hour comedy series as well.
Acapulco looks to be a racy comedy for Apple TV+
The show will center on a young Mexican man whose dream comes true when he gets the job of a lifetime at the hottest resort in Acapulco. But he’ll soon realize the job is far more complicated than he ever imagined, as all of his beliefs and morals start to be questioned. The show takes place in 1984, but with Derbez narrating and playing the present-day version of the main character.
The rest of the cast has not yet been chosen, and there’s no word on when Acapulco will debut on Apple’s streaming video service.
More Apple comedies
Apple TV+ is relatively new, but already includes multiple shows and movies for fans of comedies. Most notably, there’s On the Rocks starring Bill Murray and Rashida Jones, and written/directed by Sofia Coppola. And there’s also Ted Lasso, a sports comedy that’s building an audience for being so warm-hearted and cheerful. Other funny offerings include the animated musical Central Park, the office comedy Mythic Quest and the charming Trying.
And there’s more than just laughs on Apple TV+. It also includes thrillers, crime dramas, sci-fi and much more. Watching Acapulco or any of the shows or movies requires paying $4.99 a month. However, Cupertino includes a one-year free subscription with the purchase of many Apple devices.
