Best Bluetooth speaker 2021: The top portable, waterproof and rugged Bluetooth speakers

Modern life demands flexibility in terms of how we listen to music and the best Bluetooth speakers are capable of delivering excellent audio both at home and outdoors.

Some are completely waterproof, while many have built-in microphones so you can talk to Siri or Google Assistant and receive calls. Others can charge your phone while you’re listening to music and pricier models even automatically adjust the EQ to maximise audio quality depending on your environment.

The best Bluetooth speakers are capable of giving standard speaker units a run for their money but even compact options are now powerful enough to fill a reasonably sized room with sound. Many are totally wireless, but may also come with power leads for when the nearest plug socket is conveniently close. Those that rely upon a constant mains connection tend to be a lot heftier but will generally be able to generate a far more impressive amount of noise.

With so much choice on offer, picking the right Bluetooth speaker can be rather overwhelming. That’s where this guide comes in. We’ve compiled a list of our favourite Bluetooth speakers, divided into portable devices designed for use outdoors – all of which have some form of water resistance – and those that should only be used inside. The latter category features a number of entries that may not strictly be classified as Bluetooth speakers but offer the option to connect wirelessly over Bluetooth.

Before our list of bitesize reviews, you’ll find an at a glance summary of the very best options followed by a comprehensive guide running you through the things you should consider before making a purchase.

How to choose the best Bluetooth speaker for you

What is Bluetooth?

Bluetooth is a wireless technology standard that allows communication over short distances. Nowadays, Bluetooth technology has gone through a number of revisions, is more reliable than ever and can carry enough data for high-quality music. As such, Bluetooth speakers have risen in popularity.

Every phone and tablet will have support for Bluetooth, as will most laptops. Otherwise, an inexpensive USB Bluetooth dongle can add support. These will let you connect your music source of choice to your Bluetooth speaker – whether it’s a CD in your laptop’s drive, a locally stored MP3 file or streamed music from the internet.

When it comes to different kinds of Bluetooth and codecs, it’s worth keeping an eye out for Bluetooth aptX support. The aptX codec is usually supported only on more expensive Bluetooth speakers due to the licensing cost, but it allows for a higher-quality transmission, resulting in CD-quality songs without any loss of detail.

Pairing a Bluetooth device is straightforward: you’ll just need to put the speaker into pairing mode and search for the speaker on your device. Otherwise, near-field communication (NFC) can let you pair your device to an NFC-compatible speaker simply by touching the two together, automating the entire process.

Fixed or portable?

If you’re looking for a Bluetooth speaker you can carry around, you’ll want one with a built-in battery. Any Bluetooth speaker worth its salt will usually last for at least eight hours and some will go into double figures. Most speakers will charge over a micro-USB cable, which is handy as you can often get by only carrying one charger for your smartphone, tablet and Bluetooth speaker. Certain Bluetooth speakers aren’t designed for moving around, meaning they don’t have a battery and will instead need to be plugged into your mains. What these lack in portability they should make up with fuller and richer sound.

Ruggedised and waterproof

Bluetooth speakers make great holiday or outdoor companions. You can find waterproof and ruggedised models that are ideal to take beside the pool, or on outdoor adventures, without worrying about them getting damaged. The rugged models will have shock-proofing, meaning they can handle occasionally being thrown around or dropped. Where it comes to water resistance, be sure to check the IPX rating as that will tell you to what extent it can survive exposure to water. Some waterproof models will have IPX7, meaning they can survive being submerged in up to a metre of water for at least 30 minutes. Less waterproof models might only be IPX4-rated and so can only handle a splash.

Speaker drivers

As Bluetooth speakers vary widely in size, they can have vastly different numbers of drivers inside. The smaller speakers may only have one or two drivers, but larger ones can have significantly more. Different sizes of drivers will handle different frequency ranges. A woofer will handle the lower frequencies so, if you favour bass response, look out for a speaker with a dedicated woofer. Mid-range and tweeters will handle the mid and higher frequencies respectively. In terms of sound quality, it’s typically better to have a dedicated driver for each frequency range, rather than fewer drivers performing double duties.

Hands-free calling

Lots of Bluetooth speakers will also have a built-in microphone, which means you can use them for hands-free calls. This means they can serve a useful dual purpose and are a better option than using your phone’s speaker.

2. JBL Go 3: Best budget compact Bluetooth speaker

Price: £35 | Buy now from JBL

The Go 3 may be JBL’s smallest Bluetooth speaker but it delivers crisp-sounding audio and boasts impressive output given its size. It’s extremely portable, fitting neatly in the palm of your hand, and can also be attached to a bag via its integrated loop strap. It’s one of the most rugged compact speakers on the market thanks to its anti-tear fabric housing, and with an IP67 rating, it’s dustproof and capable of being immersed in water of up to 1m in depth.

Available in a range of eye-catching colours, including pink, blue and “Squad” (camo), the JBL Go 3 is a speaker you can take anywhere, can withstand pretty much any conditions and sounds great for the price.

Key specs – Speakers: 1; RMS power output: 4W; Wireless: Bluetooth 5.1; IP rating: IP67; Battery life: 5 hours; Dimensions: 85 x 72 x 38mm; Weight: 210g

3. Tribit StormBox Micro: A versatile speaker that packs a punch

Price: £42 | Buy now from Amazon

If you like to listen to music while out on a leisurely bike ride, this is the Bluetooth speaker for you. It features a handy strap that can be used to mount it to handlebars, though it can also be attached to a belt or bag. Sound quality is good, with a tight bass response balanced nicely with clear vocal reproduction and no sign of distortion at higher volumes.

Battery life clocks in at a solid eight hours and the StormBox Micro is well equipped to resist just about any weather conditions thanks to its IP67 certification. There’s also the option to pair up two Micros to create a stereo sound experience if the audio output of this versatile compact speaker doesn’t quite meet your requirements.

Key specs – Speakers: 1; RMS power output: 9W; Wireless: Bluetooth 5; IP rating: IP67; Battery life: 8 hours; Dimensions: 98 x 98 x 36mm; Weight: 295g

4. KitSound Diggit 55: An unmis-stake-able outdoors speaker

Price: £50 | Buy now from Amazon

The Diggit 55 has a nifty trick up its sleeve: it can be planted in the ground using a detachable stake that slots into the base of the speaker. This elevates it roughly 10cm above whatever surface you’ve inserted it in, making the speaker perfect for garden parties, trips to the beach or camping in the woods. The stake does a solid job at keeping the speaker upright and is sturdy enough to withstand light knocks, while an IP66 rating means the Diggit 55 is well-protected against water and dust.

There are two EQs to choose from, with one custom-tuned for use outdoors. When active, it boosts the overall output and pushes mids and treble to the fore, delivering engaging 360-degree audio. Bass isn’t quite as impactful as some of the similarly-priced speakers on this list but there’s a decent balance to the sound and vocals are handled particularly well. Not only does the Diggit 55 sound good, it looks the part too. The faux-wooden housing neatly complements the outdoors nature of the speaker, with a silver mesh wraparound completing what is a sleek and clean aesthetic. LED rings on both the top and base of the speaker make it easy to locate in the dark, while the five control buttons are pleasingly large and clearly labelled.

If your budget allows, we’d highly recommend picking up two Diggit 55s and pairing them in stereo mode. Doing so is simple and the resulting audio is far more satisfying in open environments.

Key specs – Speakers: 2; RMS power output: 12W; Wireless: Bluetooth 5; IP rating: IP66; Battery life: 15 hours; Dimensions: 81 x 81 x 162mm; Weight: 570g

5. Tronsmart Force: Most powerful compact Bluetooth speaker

Price: £70 | Buy now from Amazon

Tronsmart’s Force Bluetooth speaker is a corker. This hefty unit manages to output up to 40W of power through its dual-driver setup. Sonically, it’s surprisingly good: the three preset EQ profiles allow you to customise the speaker’s sound. In 3D Stereo mode, the Force delivers unbelievable width and dynamism – it completely transforms the sound into something quite special.

The speaker might not have the best control in the bass or clarity in the mid-range frequencies, but relative to its price, it’s sensational. Elsewhere, the speaker provides NFC for quick pairing and a built-in microphone for calls, accepts a microSD card and has a 3.5mm auxiliary input. It’s also IPX7-rated, meaning it’ll survive up to a metre of submersion, has a wireless stereo function (TWS) allowing you to pair two of these in stereo and, finally, features a large 6,600mAh battery that lasts up to 15 hours and can be charged via a USB-C port – fantastic.

Key specs Speakers: 2; RMS power output: 40W; Wireless: Bluetooth; IP rating: IPX7; Battery life: 15 hours; Dimensions: 200 x 64 x 80mm; Weight: 989g

6. Tribit StormBox: The best compact Bluetooth speaker for bass

Price: £70 | Buy now from Amazon

The Tribit StormBox – formerly known as the XBoom and then MaxBoom – is an affordable and durable speaker that offers 360-degree sound. Given its very reasonable price, build quality is excellent and it sounds great, too. Mids and highs are clearly articulated and, while its two 12W speakers don’t reach ear-shattering levels, everything sounds crisp at max volume.

Should you wish to add some weight to the low end, you can engage the “XBass” feature at the touch of a button. This gives the speaker’s bass output a little extra oomph and worked so well we kept it active throughout testing. IPX7-rated, the StormBox is fully waterproof and can be submerged in water up to 1m deep, making it a perfect choice for trips to the beach or lounging by the pool.

With support for the Alexa voice assistant, an AUX-in port, handy carrying strap, up to 20 hours of music playback AND the ability to pair two StormBox devices for stereo sound, this is a storming speaker that ticks pretty much every box.

Key specs – Speakers: 2; RMS power output: 2 x 12W; Wireless: Bluetooth 4.2; IP rating: IPX7; Battery life: 20 hours; Dimensions: 68 x 68 x 180mm; Weight: 575g

7. JBL Charge 4: An excellent all-rounder

Price: £99 | Buy now from JBL

The Charge 4 is one of JBL’s best-selling Bluetooth speakers and for good reason. It’s affordable, rugged and puts out sound belying its size. With IPX7-certification, the Charge 4 is fully waterproof and its tough fabric and rubber housing protect it brilliantly from all sorts of knocks and scrapes. It also possesses the ability to double up as a power bank thanks to a built-in USB-A port, making it perfect for occasions when your phone is liable to run out of battery.

What’s more, if you own another JBL speaker that’s part of the Connect+ ecosystem, such as the Boombox or Xtreme 2, you can hook the Charge 4 up to them and create a multi-speaker setup.

Key specs – Speakers: 1; RMS power output: 30W; Wireless: Bluetooth 4.2; IP rating: IPX7; Battery life: 20 hours; Dimensions: 229 x 95 x 93mm; Weight: 965g

8. Marshall Emberton: The most stylish compact Bluetooth speaker

Price: £130 | Buy now from Amazon

The Marshall Emberton is a delightful combination of style and sonic substance. The logo emblazoned on the speaker’s front grille immediately conjures up images of the guitar amps the company is famous for, but don’t be fooled: this a speaker you can take anywhere.

Build quality is not only eye-catching but rugged, too. The rubberised housing protects the Emberton from bumps and knocks and the speaker is IPX7-rated, meaning it can be submerged in water up to a depth of 1m for 30 minutes. Bluetooth pairing has a designated button, but everything else is controlled via a brass-finished multi-directional knob that adds a touch of vintage elegance. The LED battery indicator alongside it is a more modern inclusion but a welcome one, providing an accurate reflection of how much of the Emberton’s 20 hours of battery life remains.

Audio-wise, the Emberton packs a decent punch considering its compact form. The two 2in drivers and pair of passive radiators comfortably fill a small space with sound and audio is well balanced. Marshall’s True Stereophonic multi-directional sound successfully ensures you get the same experience no matter your position to the speaker, making the Emberton perfect for small, outdoor gatherings. If there’s one sonic weakness, it’s that the bass feels a little lacking when you’ve got the volume cranked all the way up, but you shouldn’t let that put you off what is otherwise a fabulous Bluetooth speaker.

Key specs – Speakers: 2; RMS power output: Not disclosed; Wireless: Bluetooth 5.0; IP rating: IPX7; Battery life: 20 hours; Dimensions: 160 x 76 x 68mm; Weight: 700g

The Megaboom 3’s standout feature is its ability to float on water while playing music, which means it’s the centrepiece of any pool party. It’s also IP67-rated, so can be submerged for 30 minutes at a depth of a metre.

As for sound quality, the Megaboom 3 has great bass response and energetic treble to boot. It comes in a range of attractive colours and looks stylish. With its sonic capabilities and floating abilities, it’s a fantastic mid-range choice.

If you’re looking for a Bluetooth speaker to brighten up a party or simply add a bit of ambience to your listening sessions, the LG XBOOM Go PL7 should definitely be on your radar. With customisable lighting effects and impressive audio performance, the PL7 catches the eye while engaging the ears.

It doesn’t skimp on more practical features though, offering multi-speaker pairing with other XBOOM devices, voice assistant support and the ability to double up as a speakerphone or power bank. An IPX5 rating means it’ll withstand rain showers and spilt beverages, just don’t go dunking it in the bath or swimming pool.

Key specs – Speakers: 2; RMS power output: 30W; Wireless: Bluetooth 5; IP rating: IPX5; Battery life:2 4 hours; Dimensions: 245 x 98 x 98mm; Weight: 1.46kg

11. B&O Beosound A1 2nd Gen: The best Bluetooth speaker under £200

Price: £199 | Buy now from Amazon

This stunning little speaker builds brilliantly on everything that was so great about its predecessor – the five-star B&O Beoplay A1. Audio quality is superb, battery life clocks in at upwards of 40 hours at low volume (nearer 18 at moderate levels) and there’s even support for the Alexa voice assistant. It’s not technically a smart speaker but instead connects to the Alexa app on your phone to allow you to control it vocally. New to the 2nd Gen is IP67 certification, meaning it’s both dust- and water-resistant, and a repositioning of the control buttons make them a lot easier to access than the original.

It lacks the 3.5mm port the Beoplay A1 had and sadly can’t be paired with its older sibling but those minor drawbacks don’t stop the new and improved A1 establishing itself as the Bluetooth speaker to beat in its price bracket.

Read our B&O Beosound A1 2nd Gen review for more details

Key specs – Speakers: 2; RMS power output: 30W; Wireless: Bluetooth 5.1 (AAC/aptX Adaptive); IP rating: IP67; Battery life: Up to 43 hours; Dimensions: 133 x 133 x 46mm; Weight: 552g

12. Ultimate Ears Hyperboom: Best large Bluetooth speaker for parties

Price: £359 | Buy now from Ultimate Ears

This beast of a Bluetooth speaker sports serious audio muscle and delivers superb sound across the frequency spectrum. It’s unashamedly big on bass but not to the extent where the low-end overpowers what are coherently communicated mids and treble. Physical controls are simple yet effective, while a pull-out strap enables the Hyperboom to be carried around, although its size and weight mean you won’t want to lug it too far. It’s water-resistant, too, so can be used outdoors without any worries, and you can tweak the audio to your liking using UE’s Boom app.

13. Escape P9: The best premium outdoor speaker

Price: £999 | Buy now from Escape Speakers

Many advertise themselves as outdoor speakers but none are in the same league as the Escape P9. This sensational Bluetooth speaker is not only aesthetically pleasing but also sounds incredible. With the higher-quality aptX codec at its disposal, the P9 delivers an unbelievable accuracy throughout the frequency range, notably in the sub and mid-bass tones, where this speaker completely trumps the pack.

But that’s not all: it doesn’t distort at max volume – and boy, does it go loud. Think Notting Hill Carnival, outdoor festivals and very, very large garden parties – this has you covered.

Elsewhere, the speaker has an app, which allows you to tweak the EQ settings and utilise the integrated music services. There’s a USB and 3.5mm auxiliary jack for wired connections, and a kettle plug to charge the LiFePo 4 battery, which lasts eight hours on a single charge. Last but certainly not least, it’s IPX4-certified so it’ll survive the rain.

Key specs – Speakers: 5; RMS power output: 100W; Wireless: Bluetooth aptX; IP rating: IPX4; Battery life: 8 hours; Dimensions: 293 x 293 x 731mm; Weight: 1.23kg

The best Bluetooth speakers for indoor use

While some of these speakers are still portable, they don’t have IP ratings for water resistance, so you won’t want to use them outside if it looks like rain is on the way. In some cases, the speakers below are designed solely for use in your home and don’t have an internal battery, meaning they always have to be plugged into a power source.

14. Amazon Echo Dot (4th gen): The best budget smart speaker with Bluetooth

Price: £50 | Buy now from Amazon

Amazon’s original Echo Dot released back in 2016 and was a reasonably priced option for those wanting to enter the world of smart speakers, but it sounded pretty terrible. The speaker has come a long way since then and this fourth-generation iteration is the best yet. Like the third-gen version, it houses a 1.6in speaker but sound quality has been improved. Tracks sound crisper and clearer, the speaker can pump out higher volume audio without distortion and there’s better instrument separation, too.

The spherical design means it also looks better than its predecessor and if you’re willing to spend an extra £10, you can benefit from the newly-added LED clock in-built into the speaker’s fabric housing.

Read our Amazon Echo Dot (4th gen) review for more details

Key specs – Speakers: 1; RMS power output: Unknown; Wireless: Bluetooth, WiFi; IP rating: No; Battery life: N/A; Dimensions: 100 x 100 x 89mm; Weight: 328g

15. Google Nest Audio: The best Bluetooth smart speaker under £100

Price: £89 | Buy now from John Lewis

Though the Nest Audio’s big selling point is in-built Google Assistant, it doubles up as a Bluetooth speaker and delivers very impressive sound quality for a smart speaker costing under £100. Thanks to its 75mm woofer and 19mm tweeter – a significant step-up from the single 50mm driver housed in its predecessor, the Google Home – the Nest Audio is able to communicate rich, textured sound across most musical genres. It goes pretty loud, too, though it does begin to sound a little strained when playing raucous tracks at maximum volume.

Touch controls are a little fiddly and sadly there’s no AUX-in port but if you’re looking for an affordable Google Assistant speaker with Bluetooth functionality, you won’t find better than the Nest Audio.

16. Audio Pro Addon T3: Bluetooth meets retro-looking beauty

Price: £199 | Buy now from Amazon

If you like your speakers with a bit of character and visual interest, you might be fond of the Audio Pro Addon T3. It’s reasonably large, leading you to think it might be just a mains-powered speaker, but there’s a battery built in. While you might not take it out on the road, carrying it down to the end of the garden for your next barbeque is certainly a possibility, with its convenient and attractive handle.

Key specs – Speakers: 3; RMS power output: 25W; Wireless: Bluetooth 4.0 (SBC); IP rating: No; Battery life: 30 hours; Dimensions: 215 x 135 x 115mm; Weight: 2kg

17. Dali Katch: A portable, stylish and mid-centric speaker

Price: £279 | Buy now from Amazon

The Dali Katch is an incredible Bluetooth speaker that sounds as good as it looks. Thanks to its finely-tuned drivers, the speaker reproduces some of the most impressive mid and high-end frequencies we’ve ever heard from a non-mains powered speaker.

It also gets ridiculously loud and doesn’t clip or distort at maximum volume, which is ideal if you want to enjoy music in the garden. With metallic paint, chamfered edges and an extending handbag strap, the Dali Katch is stunning to look at.

Key specs – Speakers: 6; RMS power output: 2 x 25W; Wireless: Bluetooth 4.0 aptX; IP rating: No; Battery life: 24 hours; Dimensions: 268.5 x 47 x 138mm; Weight: 1.1kg

18. Edifier S2000 MKIII: Great-sounding, eye-catching bookshelf speakers

Price: £429 | Buy now from Amazon

This mains-powered pair of active speakers deliver sonic excellence via planar diaphragm tweeters and 5.5in woofers. Audio is detailed and impactful throughout the frequency spectrum and instrument separation is highly impressive. As you’d expect from a pair of speakers of their size, the S2000 MKIII are able to comfortably fill a room with sound and there’s no distortion as you reach the upper end of the 50-level volume scale.

In addition to Bluetooth 5 connectivity (Qualcomm’s hi-res codec aptX HD is supported, which is great to see) there’s a coaxial port, optical port and two line-ins, so you’re well-covered in terms of physical connection options. You can switch between your input source and four EQ presets – monitor, dynamic, vocal and classic – via the included IR remote, while three dials on the back of the right speaker allow you to control volume and adjust treble and bass to your liking. Key information is displayed on a small digital display below the right speaker’s woofer making it a breeze to check your current settings.

Not only do the Edifier S2000 MKIII sound great and offer a pleasing amount of connection flexibility, but they also look good, with the wood veneer on the speaker enclosures adding a touch of class to any bookshelf or desk capable of accommodating them.

Key specs – Speakers: 4; RMS power output: 130W (Treble: 15W x 2, Mid-range bass: 50W x 2); Wireless: Bluetooth 5.0 (support for Qualcomm aptX HD); IP rating: No; Battery life: N/A; Dimensions: 342 x 198 x 270mm; Weight: ~20kg

19. Naim Mu-so Qb 2nd Generation: Compact design and stunning sound quality

Price: £849 | Buy now Amazon

The original Naim Mu-so Qb was an absolute triumph, with the small cuboid speaker earning a well-deserved five-star rating when we reviewed it. This second-generation iteration looks near-identical to its predecessor but there are a whole host of improvements. Among the upgrades are a reimagined interface, which includes an illuminated volume dial, compatibility with the Naim app and the inclusion of a small remote control.

The second-generation version houses upgraded drivers – one bass, two mid-range and a pair of tweeters – which are powered by a total of 300W amplification allowing the speaker to fill any room with top-quality sound. Additionally, Chromecast is built-in and there’s Apple AirPlay2 support.

It may be pricy, but it’s undoubtedly one of the best home Bluetooth speakers on the market.

The big brother of the Naim Mu-so Qb above, the Mu-so 2 (2nd generation) is an audiophile’s dream and the complete wireless speaker for those willing to part with a hefty chunk of cash. Sonically, the Mu-so 2 is brimming with finesse, even when you start to push up the volume to ear-shattering levels, and the sense of scale and impact it creates is immense.
