Last year was a tough year for smartphones. The economy fell into a recession, with millions of people unemployed, and many more sick thanks to the pandemic. Which meant there weren’t as many people buying phones, and when they were buying, they were spending less.
Counterpoint has just released its report on smartphone sales for the fourth quarter of 2020. And it doesn’t look good. Every smartphone maker saw big drops in its market share, except for Apple and Samsung (due to the iPhone 12 series and Galaxy S20 FE). Which should surprise no one.
Pixel 4a series and Pixel 5 weren’t as popular as Google had hoped
This is pretty par for the course for Google. They release a new smartphone, reviewers love the phone, but almost no one buys the actual phone. And that appears to be the case with the Pixel 4a, 4a 5G and the Pixel 5 that were released in 2020. As Google lost about 50% of its market share in that quarter. Normally, that is the biggest quarter for Google, as that is when the Pixel is released. And it’s also the holiday shopping quarter.
But, Google was not the worse off in this report. Alcatel’s market share dropped 62%, Motorola was down 69% and ZTE down a whopping 83%.
Coolpad was also down big, about 87%. However, that is because it did not release any new phones in the US in 2020. If it had, it would have likely done better. As Coolpad normally puts out budget and mid-range smartphones on carriers like Metro and T-Mobile. Which is what a lot of people bought last year.
Seeing the iPhone 12 series do so well, is a little surprising. Given the economic impact right now, but then again, it’s yearly upgrade cycle at carriers is also helping to sell more smartphones. Samsung releasing the Galaxy S20 FE for $699 also really helped the market here.
