Apple iMac 24in (2021): Apple releases redesigned iMac, available in seven different colours

It’s been a long time coming but Apple has finally updated the design of the iMac — the first major overhaul of the iMac design since 2012.

Looking like a giant iPad hung on an aluminium desk stand, the iMac measures a slim 11.5mm from front to back, no longer has a bulge at the back and comes in a choice of seven different colours: green, yellow, orange, pink, purple, blue, and silver.

Naturally, the new iMac also features the ARM-based Apple M1 chip, which we’ve been so impressed by previously in the Apple MacBook Air and MacBook Pro. Apple says that introducing the M1 chip makes the new iMac up to 85% faster than the previous 21.5in iMac, which if our previous experience with the M1 Chip in the MacBooks is anything to go by, should be a pretty accurate characterisation of its performance.

We’re also getting a new screen with the new iMac, with a 24in panel squeezed into a frame that’s only a little bit larger than the 21.5in iMac that went before it. The display comes with a higher 4.5K Retina resolution panel, too, 500 nits of brightness and wide-gamut colour reproduction. The iMac gets Apple’s True Tone colour adaptation tech and a low reflective coating.

The revamp doesn’t stop there, however. Not content with merely updating the design, colours, display and internals, the new iMac also has an all-new audio system, with a 1080p webcam that has a larger sensor than before for crisper video calls camera, and a new microphone and speaker system, too.

The microphone uses similar “Studio” technology to the MacBook Pro 16in and 13in, with a triple microphone array and beamforming helping  if those laptops are anything to go buy  to improve audio on calls and voice memos.

Meanwhile, the speaker system has been boosted with more power and a total of six audio drivers, improving sound quality and also enabling spatial audio via Dolby Atmos.

As ever, the ports and sockets are still out back and here there are more changes. On the cheapest model you only get a pair of USB-C Thunderbolt 4 ports; move up to the pricer models, however, and Apple  out of the goodness of its heart  gives you another pair of regular USB-C 3 ports.

Power is delivered by a magnetically attached power cable with an offboard power adapter  like a MagSafe connector – and, of course, the new iMac also comes with restyled and revamped keyboards and mice, colour-matched with the colour of iMac you’ve chosen, naturally.

Here, Touch ID is the story, allowing iMac users to log into their computers with a dab of the finger. Customers buying the cheaper model miss out, though, as that machine comes with a non-Touch ID version of the Magic keyboard.

All of which brings us to the key question: when will the new iMacs be available and how much will they cost? True to form, Apple has already put the prices and all the different models on its website and they’re looking quite pricey.

You’ll be able to pre-order the new iMac from the 30 April for delivery in the second half of May with prices starting at £1,249 (8GB RAM, 256GB storage) for the cheapest model and rising to £1,649 (8GB, 512GB) for the most expensive one.
