iPhone SE Plus with edge-to-edge screen might not launch for years

Replacing iPhone notch with holepunch camera makes no damn senseThe iPhone SE Plus might have a hole punch camera, not a notch.

Don’t get your hopes up for an iPhone SE Plus this year. Or next. This is rumored to be the first in the SE series with an edge-to-edge screen, but an analyst focused on the display business said Thursday that the wait will stretch into 2023.

However, a new model using the current design might arrive before then.

The future of the iPhone SE line

The tip comes from Ross Young the founder of DisplaySearch. He said via Twitter, “We now hear the next LCD iPhone SE will remain at 4.7″ in 2022. Some rumors that it may have 5G with Sub-6 GHz as well.”

The current iPhone SE released in 2020 is Apple’s last with a Home button taking up significant space on the front of the device. The follow up with apparently keep that design if it sticks with the 4.7-inch screen.

Then the followup will be coming the next year, according to Young. He says he’s been “hearing about a 6.1″ version in 2023 with punch hole rather than a notch.”

A 6.1-inch screen would make this handset approximately the same size as the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro. But this model isn’t expected to replace the 4.7-inch version. It’ll supposedly be a slightly more expensive option instead.

Young’s comment isn’t the first we’ve heard of the possibility of an iPhone with a hole punch camera. Ming-Chi Kuo from TF International Securities broke the news in March.

Kuo is also the first to talk about a iPhone SE Plus with an edge-to-edge screen. That was back in December 2019. A few months later he said the device might not be out until 2021. That seems unlikely now, and, if Young is correct, won‘t happen for two more years.
